Privacy Policy

Last updated 2026-08-10.
This policy is generated from Barkada's actual data practices using Termly's template service and reviewed against the app's real feature set. It's a strong, current reflection of what Barkada collects and does — but as with any template-based policy, a final attorney read-through before relying on it in a dispute is still good practice.

Who we are

Barkada is a memory and identity app for friend groups, operated by Barkada Club LLC, a New York limited liability company. This policy explains what information Barkada collects, how it's used, who can see it, and what control you have over it.

What we collect

Account information: your name, and either a phone number or an email/Google account, depending on how you sign in.

Content you add: your profile photo, and the hangouts, photos, locations, dates, captions, and responses you and your barkada members log in the app.

Usage data: basic app usage and screen-view events (via PostHog) so we can see what's working and what isn't. Crash and error reports (via Sentry) so we can fix bugs. Neither includes the content of your hangouts or messages.

Device data: a push notification token (via Expo/Apple/Google's push services) if you enable notifications, so we can deliver them to your device.

We do not collect precise background location, contacts, or browsing history from your device, and we do not process any sensitive personal information (such as racial or ethnic origin, religious beliefs, or health data). Barkada does not use any of your data for third-party advertising — there are no ads in the app, and we do not sell or share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.

How we use it

To operate Barkada's core features — your Timeline, Superlatives, Stats, Barkada Type, and notifications. To create and maintain your account. To keep the app secure and working (crash reporting, basic usage analytics, fraud prevention). To respond if you contact us or submit in-app feedback. To comply with our legal obligations. We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with data brokers or advertisers.

Who can see your data

Content you log — hangouts, photos, attendance, reactions, poll answers — is visible only to the other members of the specific barkada it belongs to, never to the public or to members of a different barkada. Your name and profile photo are visible to anyone you share a barkada with.

If you submit in-app feedback or a content report, that goes directly to us for review — it is not visible to anyone in your barkada.

Who we share it with

We use a small number of service providers to run the app, each of which processes data on our behalf under their own security and privacy commitments, and none of which are permitted to use your data for their own purposes:

Supabase (database, file storage, and sign-in) — hosted in the United States. PostHog (product analytics). Sentry (crash reporting). Expo (push notification delivery). Google (Sign in with Google, if you use it). Apple (Sign in with Apple, if you use it). Twilio (phone verification, if you sign in with a phone number). Resend (transactional email, e.g. password resets and account notices). RevenueCat, plus Apple/Google (subscription billing, if you purchase Barkada Premium — all payment details are handled directly by Apple's App Store or Google Play; we never see your card information).

We don't sell or share personal information for third parties' own marketing purposes, and we have not done so in the preceding twelve months. We may also share information if required by law, or in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of business assets.

Blocking and reporting

You can block another member from within a shared barkada (Profile → Blocked users), which hides that person's content from your own view without removing them from the group. You can also report content or a user for review; reports go to us, not to your barkada.

Data retention and deletion

We keep your information for as long as your account is active — we don't have a fixed retention period beyond that, since the data only serves a purpose while you're using the Service. You can permanently delete your account at any time from within the app (Profile → Delete my account). Deleting your account removes your profile, login credentials, and personal data.

Content you contributed to a shared barkada — a hangout you logged, a photo you added — may remain visible to the other members of that barkada afterward, no longer attributed to you, since it's part of your friend group's shared history, not just your own. This is also true if another member removes you from a barkada, or if you leave one: content you already contributed stays part of that barkada's shared history and isn't deleted with your membership. Deleting your account, however, always removes your personal data as described above.

Children's privacy

Barkada is intended for users 13 and older, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you are between 13 and the age of majority where you live, you confirm you have your parent or guardian's permission to use the Service. If we learn that we've collected personal information from a child under 13, we will delete it as quickly as reasonably possible. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us at hubert@barkada.club.

Do Not Track

Some browsers offer a "Do Not Track" signal. There's currently no common industry standard for how to respond to it, so we don't respond to DNT signals at this time. Since we don't use third-party advertising trackers, this has no practical effect on how we handle your information.

Your rights

You can view and update your name and photo, and permanently delete your account and its personal data, at any time from within the app.

If you're a resident of California or another US state with a comprehensive privacy law (including Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, or Virginia), you may also have the right to: know and access the personal information we hold about you; correct inaccuracies; request deletion of your personal information; obtain a copy of the information you've provided us; opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information, or targeted advertising (we don't engage in either); and not be discriminated against for exercising these rights.

To exercise any of these rights, email us at hubert@barkada.club. We'll verify your identity before acting on a request. If we decline a request, you may appeal by emailing us again — we'll respond in writing, and if we uphold the decision, you may escalate to your state attorney general. California residents can also request, once a year and free of charge, a summary of any personal information we've disclosed to third parties for direct marketing purposes (we don't currently do this) under the "Shine the Light" law.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes materially, we'll update the date at the top of this page and, where required, notify you in the app.
